History
The Cantanhede Winery Co-op (CWC) was established in 1954 in Cantanhede where viticulture dates back to the Roman period and where we find the main wine production area of the Bairrada Demarcated Region.
Currently it has around 1400 associated winegrowers, representing a total area of 1200 hectares of vineyards; this winery is the largest producer in the region, producing around 25 to 30% of the total production and certifying more than half of its production with the Bairrada Designation of Origin, in this way taking on an outstanding leading role in this segment and also in the Regional Wines of the Beiras. Currently its production policy is based on enhancing Portuguese varietals, especially from Bairrada as well as their protection, promotion and distribution. In the reds, we highlight the red varietal Baga but also Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz and in the white varietals, Bical, Maria Gomes and Arinto, which are being used to produce new styles of wines, which result from the particular characteristics of the grapes and also from a permanent care and effort modernise the winemaking processes.
In this context we are, amongst our counterparts, one of the first companies to have established an Associates Help Service for Production in Integrated Protection, which is a production system that fosters Respect and Non-aggression of the environment. Presently, we are carrying out a plan towards Integrated Production that aims to avail itself of a wider knowledge and quality control at every stage of the production process; from the Vineyard to the Bottle. Another result of this concern is the strategic partnership established with BIOCANT (Technological Park) at the R&D level. Through this partnership we aim to develop a deeper knowledge of the genome of our main varietals, the main diseases that afflict them and possible solutions to protect them more resourcefully. We also wish to explore ways to boost their singularities and ways of appreciating them, as well as ways of ensuring an effective protection of their identity and distinctiveness.
The consolidation of the quality philosophy that guides our production process and the strategy implemented to put these into practice culminated with the awarding of the Quality Certificate issued by NP EN ISO 9001:2008, the implementation of HACCP, the BSCI and ISO 20000 (in the final stage of implementation) certification.
