The Pato family has been producing wine in Quinta do Ribeirinho, at least, since the eighteenth century. João Pato started bottling wine from his vineyards in 1970, becoming the first producer-bottler in the Bairrada region, after the region was demarcated.

History

The Pato family, produces wine in Quinta do Ribeirinho, at least since the eighteenth century. João Pato started bottling wine from his vineyards in 1970, becoming the first producer-bottler in the Bairrada region, after the region was demarcated.
His son Luis Pato inherited his nonconformist and pioneering spirit and in 1980 took over the farm. The wine from that first harvest is of exceptional quality and an absolute rarity and is considered a treasure by wine-lovers. Luis Pato carried out a radical change in the Cellar, and equipped it to allow for a production of modern style wines, while never neglecting the character of the traditional grape varieties. He replaced the old oak vats with stainless steel tanks and wine barrels of Portuguese oak and French oak. He also introduced the controlled fermentation temperature process, as well as the destemming of red grapes, a rarely used technique at that time.
However, this was not the only thing Luis Pato innovated. He also embraced a professional attitude as a producer, by developing a brave and dynamic marketing strategy and capturing the interest of international markets for his wine, which is currently well known on the European, American and Asian markets, and always recognised as a symbol of quality Portuguese Estate Wines (Vinhos de Quinta).

Distinctive Aspects

His most recent wine creations are Informal and Quinta do Moinho, white sparkling wines produced from Baga grapes collected in the first harvest from one single vineyard: Informal comes from Vinha da Panasqueira and Quinta do Moinho comes from the vineyard with the same name. In parallel, he created the DUET sparkling wines produced with two grape varieties: Baga-Maria Gomes, Baga-Touriga Nacional, and Bical-Cerceal and Baga-Bical.
