Igreja de Santo António dos Olivais

Santo António dos Olivais, Coimbra

Presentation
In 1217, the wife of King Afonso II, Dona Urraca, gave a chapel to the Franciscans, who had just arrived in Portugal, to set up temporary quarters. From among this small community, a young man called Fernando de Bolhões, better known as St. Antonio de Lisboa or of Pádua, who took Franciscan orders, was canonised in 1232.

Notes

The present church building has eighteenth century baroque features. Inside, the blue and white narrative tiles of the eighteenth century, with scenes depicting the life of Saint Anthony are worthy of note.
