The University of Coimbra is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It was founded in Lisbon by D. Dinis, in 1290 and finally transferred to Coimbra in 1537, where it occupied the buildings of Paço Real Medieval (the medieval royal palace).
Observations
During the reigns of João V and José I the university was extensively restructured, not only in its teaching but also through the construction of new buildings in baroque and neoclassical style.
