Aveiro Salt Flats

The exploitation of salt in the Aveiro region goes back to a time before the existence of the Ria.

The first written document on the Aveiro salt pan dates from before the foundation of Portugal.

The salt pans integrate a more or less complex set of ditches, channels, tanks and decantation and evaporation ponds separated by dikes, slopes and marshes colonized by the typical salt marsh vegetation.
