Capela de Santo Amaro (Chapel of Santo Amaro)

Cantanhede
Presentation

It is located in the place of Quintã, Parish of Cadima, formerly (16th century), the estate to which the Chapel of Santo Amaro belonged (now separated and handed over to the Parish of Cadima), which belonged to the Monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra.

Observations

The 16th-century temple features a simple architectural design, with a portico of perfect arch, above which there is a quadrilobed oculus from a later period. Inside, it stands out a stone altarpiece from Ançã with three niches, housing the images of St. Amaro, St. Anthony, and the Virgin with Child, all from the 16th century. A plaque placed next to the main door of the temple, engraved in 1543, attests to the time of its foundation and patronage, indicating that the monks of Coimbra had established the chapel in the early 16th century.

Particularities

Its influence extended to the place of Tocha, and during the feast of St. Amaro on January 15th, it was customary to travel to the pilgrimage, bringing offerings to St. Amaro as a way of showing gratitude for their harvests. This explains the existence of large barns on the mentioned estate, among other offerings, such as wax images offered to St. Amaro, asking for protection for the animals.
