The reconstruction of the northern wing of the Santa Cruz Monastery buildings, as part of the Manueline and Joanine reforms, led to the creation of a second cloister: the Manga Cloister, also known as the Third Cloister or Infirmary Cloister.
This cloister is one of the first entirely Renaissance architectural works in Portugal, designed by João de Ruão, who designed the fountain and the four reliefs for the central fountain's cubicles, evocative of the Fountain of Life.
The Manga Cloister was handed over to the City Council in 1839 and since then has undergone several restoration and conservation works.
João de Ruão designed the plan and made the bas-reliefs for the interior of the four cubels or chapels.
It is one of the first entirely Renaissance architectural works made in Portugal, and its structure is evocative of the Fountain of Life.
