Museu Académico
Presentation
The Museu Académico, which functions under the auspices of the University, aims to collect, preserve and publicise the social, artistic and cultural values of the student community.
The museum holds collections of academic dress and of photographs that show the history of student life in Coimbra.
Observations
The rich heritage of the different academic interest groups makes it possible for the museum to show various different exhibitions on a variety of themes. Its documental collection has also been useful for research into student life.
The first museum dedicated to university life was set up in 1951, based on an exhibition organised by the Students? Union (the Associação Académica de Coimbra) and by the organising committee of the Queima das Fitas, the yearly student festival, in 1950. However, it was only in 1987 that the museum was given its own space in the Colégio de S. Jerónimo.
