Presentation

Category: Historic Building|World Heritage Site

Consisting of two distinct buildings, known as the “Casa de Cima” or Casa do Arco and the “Casa de Baixo” or Casa da Torre, it is built on the Torre da Contenda, once part of the city's defensive wall. The current Sub-Ripas Palace has a magnificent Manueline portal from the first half of the 16th century. The dozens of bas-reliefs on the exterior walls are remarkable and, based on their style and technique, can be attributed to the workshop of João de Ruão.

The building currently houses some of the services of the Institute of Archaeology of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra and can only be admired from the outside.

Observations

The external walls have numerous bass-relief panels and their style and technique can be attributed to the workshop of João de Ruão that, coincidentally, was a few meters away from the palace.

Remark: Currently, some services of archaeology institute of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra function there so they are not open to the public.
