Known as Pateira de Fermentelos, it is the largest natural lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula.
It is a sensitive area and an important wetland of the REDE NATURA 2000. There occur habitats, ecosystems and species with national and international protection status.

There are several species of fauna associated with this ecological system of habitats. These include the otter, water mole and Iberian frog, fish such as shad and savanna, and birds such as curlews, black kite and many others.
The importance of this area goes beyond its ecological and biophysical values. Its landscape and cultural impact make this lake a tourist attraction.
