Known as Pateira de Fermentelos, it is the largest natural lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula.

It is a sensitive area and an important wetland of the REDE NATURA 2000. There occur habitats, ecosystems and species with national and international protection status.

It is in the lagoon that the visitor finds the natural space and its biophysical components, and it is here that the desire to get to know it, gives rise to the desire to return.

Important habitats exist in this area and are a protection priority for the EU which in itself is a statement on the ecological value of this ecosystem.

There are several species of fauna associated with this ecological system of habitats. These include the otter, water mole and Iberian frog, fish such as shad and savanna, and birds such as curlews, black kite and many others.

The importance of this area goes beyond its ecological and biophysical values. Its landscape and cultural impact make this lake a tourist attraction.

Pateira de Fermentelos, the largest lake on the Iberian Peninsula, has a reflection pool of over 5 hectares in times of heavy rainfall.

Visitors can walk along the shores of the lake in close contact with nature, take a boat trip on one of the Bateiras, rest in the parks or simply enjoy the splendour of the lake and the landscapes to which it opens up.
