This tower of medieval origin was part of the old defensive wall of Coimbra and was then known as Torre do Prior do Ameal. At the beginning of the 16th century, it underwent a major renovation, the appearance of which has remained almost unchanged to this day. Its current name derives from the fact that the poet António Nobre (1867-1900) lived there at the end of the 19th century. Since July 2015, the Torre de Anto has housed the Coimbra Guitar and Fado Center, part of the Coimbra Municipal Museum program, which aims to contribute to the knowledge and dissemination of an artistic expression that has projected the city onto the world stage.
