The Vale de Canas National Forest, which in the 16th century was known as the “King's Forest” because it belonged to the Portuguese Crown, has a high level of biodiversity and considerable genetic heritage, playing an important role in conservation and providing opportunities to enjoy nature. It is an area of high environmental quality, with excellent conditions for environmental education and awareness activities, as well as sports, recreation, and leisure. In terms of fauna, it is home to many species, including two Iberian endemics: the long-tailed lizard and the Iberian frog.
