In the 16th century it was known as "King's Forest".
It belonged to the Portuguese Royal Crown and was populated by spontaneous vegetation. The richness of this forest consists essentially in its fauna, since it shelters two Iberian endemisms, the long-tailed lizard and the Iberian frog.
