The building of the Municipal Archive of Coimbra, with a strong classical design, is divided into two main sections, reflecting the functionality and significance of the site. The main section, consisting of four floors, is dedicated to administration and public service areas, housing the Reading Room, Catalogue Room, Conference Room, and Temporary Exhibition spaces.
The second section, with six floors, serves as a repository for the various types of documents, including books, parchments, and other archival materials, which are essential for preserving the historical heritage of the city. Among the numerous documents stored in this archive, the founding diploma of the General Studies in Portugal, granted by King Dinis, stands out for its historical importance. This document is one of the most emblematic pieces in the history of education in the country.
The construction of the Archive began in 1943, according to the project by architect Alberto José Pessoa, and it was inaugurated in 1948, being the first building completed in the newly established University City of Coimbra.
