The Archive building, with its strong classical features, is divided into two distinct sections. The main section has four floors and is used for administration and public consultation and service, with reading rooms, catalog rooms, conference rooms, and temporary exhibition rooms. The second section, with six floors, serves as a repository for various types of documents, books, and parchments. Among the voluminous documentary heritage deposited in the archive, the founding diploma of General Studies in Portugal, granted by King Dinis, stands out for its historical value. Construction began in 1943, according to the design of architect Alberto José Pessoa, and the building was inaugurated in 1948. It was the first building to be completed in the University City.
The archive is open to the public for consultation by prior appointment.
