Barco Moliceiro

The Barcos (boats) Moliceiros are one of the emblems of the Ria de Aveiro, are half-moon shaped and have a large mast and rudder. These boats were used to collect and transport seaweed (for fertilizing the fields). One of their distinguishing features of these vessels is the decorative richness they display. They are painted with bright colours and drawings, depicting themes that range from the popular and satirical to the romantic, religious or bawdry and include humorous sayings that are full of local character.
