The residence of the physician Adolfo Rocha from 1953 until 1995 (the year of his death) was designed by the architect Valdez. It opened to the public on August 12, 2007, the centenary of the poet's birth.
Miguel Torga, pseudonym of Adolfo Correia da Rocha, was one of the most influential Portuguese writers of the 20th century. Miguel Torga stood out as a poet, short story writer, and memoirist, but he also wrote novels, plays, and essays.
The museum's collection includes not only some first editions of his work and manuscripts, but also personal objects and works of art (paintings, ceramics, religious art).
Nearby is a monument, by an unknown artist, but believed to have been commissioned by the Coimbra City Council to honor the poet and writer Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), one of the greatest poets of the Portuguese language, whose work is unquestionably unique on an international level.
The monument consists of a curved wall with two stone benches on either side. On the wall are bronze plaques with biographical details of the poet and a medallion with the face of Fernando Pessoa, as immortalized by Almada Negreiros. On the opposite side is one of the most famous verses from Fernando Pessoa's work: “Everything is worthwhile / if the soul is not small.”
