Estátua Pedro Teixeira

Cantanhede
Presentation
This is a bronze sculpture of enormous proportions, by Celestino Alves André, wrought in 1993, perpetuating the memory of Captain Pedro Teixeira, pioneer and conqueror of the Amazon.
Observations
Pedro Teixeira was born in Cantanhede, around 1585, and went to Brazil in 1607, where he would be acclaimed for expelling the French from Maranhão, and for commanding the Portuguese against the attempts of the Dutch and the English to occupy the area. Navigating the Amazon River, from the estuary to Quito, he contributed decisively towards the definition of the Brazilian territory, the largest country in Latin America, and the only country on this continent where Portuguese is the official language.
