Presentation

The College of Santo António da Pedreira is one of the religious colleges that form part of the vast historical heritage of the university city of Coimbra.

Established in 1602 on top of a quarry by Reformed Franciscan friars or Capuchin friars known as “Pedreiras,” it became part of the University in 1611. Closed in 1834, the building passed into private hands and is now the Dr. Elísio de Moura Children's Home. Among the best-preserved areas are the cloister, with a direct connection to the college gate, and the chapel, with walls decorated with tiles depicting episodes from the life of Saint Anthony.

Built to accommodate students connected to religious and academic life, it reflects the functional architectural style of the time and the spiritual vocation dedicated to Saint Anthony, one of the most popular saints in Portugal.

Observations

Some of the original structures may be partially altered due to the passage of time and adaptation to new uses.

Particularities

Located in an area once known as "the quarry," the college owes its name to the local topography, which also gives it a unique character among the city's colleges.

Extra Information

It is a lesser-known building among the more popular tourist routes, making it a place of discovery for visitors looking to explore the less obvious roots of the city.

Aspetos Diferenciadores

The strong connection to Saint Anthony and his popularity among the Portuguese people gives the college a distinctive emotional and identity-based character within the network of religious colleges in Coimbra.

History

The college was founded to support the education of clergy and students at a time when Coimbra was consolidating its position as the capital of knowledge. With roots in the 17th century, it remained active for long periods until, like many other religious buildings, it underwent reconfigurations after the extinction of religious orders. Its heritage remains alive in the city's architectural memory.
