The oldest references to this temple date back to 1083; traces of a pre-Romanesque cloister from that period are still visible (currently part of the Machado de Castro National Museum tour).
Between 1128 and 1131, Bishop Bernardo ordered the construction of the new church of São João, which would be the episcopal chapel until the 17th century. Between 1684 and 1704, the temple underwent extensive restructuring work that changed its orientation, allowing access to the interior of the church from the street.
No longer used for religious worship, it is now part of the Machado de Castro National Museum.
