The forest system of the Dunas de Vagos National Forest occupies a flat and very extensive area of 2,289 hectares, rich in native flora and fauna. The Dunas de Vagos are separated from the ocean by a strip of cultivated land (about 1000 meters wide on average), followed parallel by a channel of the Ria de Aveiro – Mira channel and finally by a sandy coastal strip.
There are three forest ranger houses called Senhora de Vagos, Rocião, and Fonte Nova, and a lookout post in Areão.
