Álvaro Pedro, known as Pedro dos Leitões, was born on March 6, 1903, in Alpalhão, Anadia. At the age of 17, he left for Brazil, where he worked as a chef in a dining car, on a train that connects Brazil to Argentina. He returned to Portugal and continued in the area, working in several hotels where he improved his training.
In 1941, he acquired his first establishment, which operated with a grocery section and another tavern, where he sold suckling pig sandwiches as a meal to drivers who, at the time, were traveling on the EN1. This is how Pedro dos Leitões begins (the first restaurant in the world to sell Bairrada-style roast suckling pig). In 1949 he opened a new restaurant space, in the same place where it is now located, remaining, for several years, the only Bairrada roast suckling pig restaurant in Portugal.
In 1982 he formed the partnership with his nephew Carlos Alberto Simões Castela. Álvaro Pedro dies on April 12, 1987, at the age of 84, and leaves the continuity of his work to the command of his nephew Carlos Alberto, who, in 1996, offers partnership to his children, Sandra, Pedro and Filipe, who, together with his father, form the current management of the company.
Today, Pedro dos Leitões Restaurant has a capacity for around 430 people, offering a comfortable space for its customers, as well as a unique service in the art of restoration and, in particular, in its ex-libris, Leitão à Bairrada.
