My roots are in Barrô, Aguada de Baixo, and Aguada de Cima, villages in the north of Bairrada. My father was a mechanic and my mother a seamstress. Like so many humble Portuguese people, they were forced to emigrate, and that is why I was born in South Africa.
I returned to Bairrada when I was two years old and went to live with my grandfather Aristides, a master of clay and general foreman of the famous Cerâmica do Bicarenho. He taught me the secrets of his craft as well as agricultural tasks, especially vineyard cultivation and winemaking.
In order to recreate the "light red" my grandfather Aristides used to make, known as palheto and famous in the surrounding area, it was necessary to have vineyards similar to his, which, through inheritance, were passed down to my uncles. So, the first step I took was to find a traditional vineyard that I could cultivate.
And so, Malápio was born!
